Culturally Competent Nursing Care for the LGBTQ+ Community

Kourtney Robinson, BSN, RN

In the ever-evolving landscape of gender and sexual identity, it is imperative that psychiatric mental health nurses remain current in their knowledge of the terminology, nursing implications, and treatment issues that impact the LGBTQ community. This knowledge will inform the most appropriate and empathic approaches to the nursing care of individuals within this growing community.

Psychiatric mental health nurses must effectively care for LGBTQ patients daily. However, input from leadership and direct care staff nurses through formal education evaluations has indicated a professional nursing knowledge and skills gap in effective, collaborative, and empathic nursing care for LGBTQ individuals at the hospital.

At the conclusion of this event, participants should be able to:

  • Define sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  • List two health disparities commonly seen in the LGBTQ+ community.

Registration if free.
